The Most MISused Verses In The Bible By Eric J. Bargerhuff

Are you sure you know what your favorite Bible verses mean?

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."--Philippians 4:13
"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"--Jeremiah 29:11
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good."--Romans 8:28

These and a surprising number of well-known Scripture passages are commonly misused or misunderstood. Even well-intentioned Christians take important verses out of context, and pastor Eric J. Bargerhuff has seen the effects: confusion, poor decisions, and a distorted view of God's Word.

In this concise yet thorough book, Bargerhuff helps all of us understand what these verses meant when they were written so we can apply them accurately today. Providing fascinating historical and scriptural insights, he shows how to read God's promises and instructions in context and appreciate even more the Bible's eternal message.

I still don't know what to say about this book. It was a great read, yes, but did I agree with everything the author said? No. I know certain verses in the Bible are often taken out of context but to say God was speaking to a nation in Jeremiah 29:11 ('For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.' )is true, but that it's not applicable to an individual in this time? I don't agree with. That verse is a promise from God. The author is right in saying God is preparing us for eternity but we still have to provide for our families while here on earth and to me this is a promise that God will see us through.

I'm not saying the author is wrong, I agree with the points he makes I just think he could have elaborated further and verses can have many meanings. I guess this is what he was trying to get away from? I don;t know. Still a great read none the less!

I enjoyed realding the authors personal insights and the inward dealing of how healing works. God is an almighty God and works in some mysterious ways, this book certainly ttifies to that. Feathers & Godl dust? Well, you'll just have to read to find out! But I never doubt God and the people he has chosen to help do his work here on earth. This is a great read if you're looking for more of a one on one with a believer in healing.

Unstuck By Arnie Cole & Michael Ross

Does your relationship with God seem broken? Full of silence and distance? Do you ever want more than just an "okay" walk with Christ? After conducting extensive research, including more than 70,000 surveys, Back to the Bible leaders Arnie Cole and Michael Ross found many Christians feel the same way. But they also discovered the secrets that help believers grow and thrive spiritually. And they want to share what they discovered with you. Filled with honest stories and real-life examples, Unstuck provides you with practical and proven ways to encounter Scripture daily, connect with God, and revitalize your faith. Stop just going through the motions and learn how to tap into God's Word to live out the life He desires for you.
As Christians, sometimes we get "stuck" in a routine. Go to church on Sunday, read your Bible, pray everyday, etc. etc. etc. But we fail as people to find new ways to grow in God's word, to ignite the flame in our souls that has dimmed. Rules are made to be broken, and that is just what the author describes in this book. We need to step out of our comfot zone and actually start LIVING for God, rather than living the way we think God wants us to live. A great book for spiritual growth. Would definitely reccomend. What happened to us? Why are so many people let down by life? We once had dreams--important dreams that gave us purpose--but somehow we got off track. It's certainly not what God wants for us. Our Designer dreamed unique dreams for each of us before we were even born. He skillfully wove them into our DNA, along with the gifts and abilities to achieve those dreams. But here we are, chasing earthly applause when we could be experiencing heaven's approval. If you want confidence in knowing God's will, if you want each day to count, journey with Dutch Sheets as he presents soul-stirring lessons from the Bible and godly dreamers of today. When you hear God's call on your life, you will never be the same.
Honestly, I've been reading this book in pieces and haven't finished yet, but I like books like that sometimes. I find I'm using it as a study, as we've all wondered at some time or another if we're doing what God put us here to do. The author makes you rethink your purpose and if you're living your life to it's full potential, aesthetically pleaing to God and honoring and worshipping him in all you do. I think the author is very succesful in getting his point across. He wants us to realize that we are to be looking toward Hevenly approval and take our eyes off the applause of the earth. I would reccomnd this book for study groups as itwould make a great session. "Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. My Stubborn Heart By Becky Wade

Kate Donovan is burned out on work, worn down by her dating relationships, and in need of an adventure. When her grandmother asks her to accompany her to Redbud, Pennsylvania, to restore the grand old house she grew up in, Kate jumps at the chance. Upon her arrival in Redbud, Kate meets Matt Jarreau, the man hired to renovate the house. Kate can't help being attracted to him, drawn by both his good looks and something else she can't quite put her finger on. He's clearly wounded--hiding from people, from God, and from his past. Yet Kate sets her stubborn heart on bringing him out of the dark and back into the light... whether he likes it or not. When the stilted, uncomfortable interactions between Kate and Matt slowly shift into something more, is God finally answering the longing of her heart? Or will Kate be required to give up more than she ever dreamed?
God answers prayer in his time, and his way, not ours, and that is exactly what the undertones of this book is about. I have to be honest, the cover drew me in first, because it looked like a fun and flirty read, but it was a great storyline, none the less. We all know someone in the same situation, if not ourselves and can place them in the story. It's a great Sunday afternoon on the porch swing type of book. I felt connected with the characters and drawn into the book. I think the author accomplished what she set out to do, and provide as real characters as possible. I would reccomend this book. What a fantastic suspenseful novel!! I think this book would make a fabulous movie! Dani drew the reader in slowly and then built up to the climax. I really enjoy being sucked in to a book, and this was one of them! The character development is not just limited to the main characters but siblings and friends as well. I've always wantd to visit Alaska, and the writer just described Heaven to me, reaffirming my suspicions. I would reccomend this book for young adults. I think it's a great read, a bit of romance tied up in the suspense. Love it!! "Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Travellers Rest By Ann Tatlock

A YOUNG WOMAN determined to honor her commitment... AN INJURED SOLDIER convinced life is no longer worth living... A RETIRED DOCTOR certain it's too late to be forgiven... Jane Morrow has a dilemma, and love alone may not solve it. Her faith has never been strong, yet somehow she hopes God will answer her prayers and tell her what to do. The answer she finds may not be at all what she expected...
This is Ann's 9th book, but the first I can recall reading. I was suprised at how the character handled the things that was thrown at her and made me think about how I would handle it in the same situation. Sometimes our faith wavers and we begin to doubt whether God is there, but this made me stop several times as I could put myself in her shoes. I felt the reality of the story as it wasn't far fetched and is something that could happen in real life. I like how the characters are well developed and you can feel the pain and heartache right along, empathy comes to mind. I would definitely reccomend, and I hope this isn;t the last Tatlock novel! Hiking Through: One Man's Journey to Peace and Freedom on the Appalachian Trail By Paul Stutzman

After Paul Stutzman lost his wife to breast cancer, he sensed a tug on his heart--the call to a challenge, the call to pursue a dream. With a mixture of dread and determination, Paul left his job, traveled to Georgia, and took his first steps on the Appalachian Trail. What he learned during the next four and a half months changed his life--and can change yours as well. In Hiking Through, you'll join Paul on his remarkable 2,176-mile trip through fourteen states in search of peace and a renewed sense of purpose. Along the way, you'll meet fascinating and funny people, experience trail magic, and discover that every choice we make on the path has consequences for the journey. More than that, you'll come away with a new understanding of God's grace and guidance--even in the smallest things.
Stutzman did a great job opening the reader up to his personal life from as far back as he can rememeber to present day. He introduces us to people he has met along the way, it almost feels as though you are reading his journal and there's always something to keep the reader interested. I would definitely reccomend this book, it was a bit of a slow read for me, but I did enjoy getting a glimpse into the readers life and his relationship with God. Heaven In Her Arms By Catherine Hickem

Jesus is Mary’s son and Jesus is the Son of God. The God of the universe hand picked Mary to raise His Son! Mary was there the day Jesus was born and she was there the day he was crucified. Her story is deep and rich and has myriad lessons for any woman—mothers, daughters, sisters, friends. Mary’s story reveals that a woman’s heart is important to the Father. "When God selected Mary,” Hickem says, “He was looking for heart. God set out to find the precise woman who would give her heart to Him, completely and wholly. He wanted a woman with whom He could entrust His perfect Son. This was going to be no ordinary woman.” Heaven in Her Arms will touch your heart if you are facing fear and uncertainty, wondering about leaving your plans behind, feeling a need for community and the support of other women, or wanting to deepen your life of faith. Hickem reflects on Mary’s story and offers practical applications, as well as inspiring real-life stories from contemporary women. With a six-week Bible study for individuals or small groups, Heaven in Her Arms shows the life of faith Mary exemplified and God’s tender heart for His daughters.
I always wondered how God chose Mary to raise his son, Jesus, and this book offers some great insight! Motherhood is often pushed aside and unappreciated, this book made me feel more content with my decision to be a stay at home Mom to my 19 month old son. This book would be a great discussion piece amongst Bible study or ladies grous as it talks about theultimate Mother of all time, Mary. There's a lot of talk about Male Heroes of the scriptures but rarely do we get a glimpse of the female heroes. I now look at my own life in a new light and the paths God has chosen for me, for he knows what's best for us. I would definitely reccomend this book, it's also a great gift giving piece, especially at Mothers day!

Wait No More By John Rosati

There are over 130 million orphans worldwide. The pro-life/pro-choice debate continues to consume politics and everyday conversations. Readers want to know what they can do to make a difference on these issues. Wait No More tells Kelly and John Rosati’s story of experiencing God more fully through the great blessings and challenges encountered during their journey to adopt four children from the U.S. foster care system. It is a story of God’s faithfulness to grow a beautiful family, through adoption, from the ashes of child abuse, neglect, and abandonment. The Rosatis strongly believe that God’s solution for orphaned children in the foster care system involves ordinary Christians desiring to live out an authentic pro-life commitment requiring action, not just words. Their story reveals how their beliefs challenged, enriched, and completely changed their family’s life.
This book is about one familys journey through the adoption system and how things work, the struggles, the waiting and putting their faith in God. This book speaks of the struggles and hardships that the family had to endure to get where they are today. Nothing is sugar coated, from the foster system to the legal adoptions. But it's more about one persons experience with God's calling on their heart and how they obeyed and persevered through it all. I was adopted myself so it was quite interesting to read from the adult point of view. Would definitely reccomend!

Anything: The Prayer That Unlcoked My God & My Soul By Jennie Allen

Safe. Comfortable. Happy. Words we all love. Feelings we want. Even crave. We may love God, but being that he's invisible, words like comfortable seem to feel better faster. We are all chasing something. Our hearts were made to run hard and fast after things that move us. But as a generation we are all beginning to stir and wake up, identifying that these words don't satisfy for long, especially when compared to God. If God is real, and we are going to live with Him forever, shouldn't He be everything? Caught in this familiar haze of worldly happiness and empty pursuits, Jennie Allen and her husband Zac prayed a courageous prayer of abandonment that took them on an adventure God had written for them. "God, we will do anything. Anything," Anything is a prayer of surrender that will spark something. A prayer that will move us to stop chasing things that just make us feel happy and start living a life that matters. A life that is... Surrendered. Reckless. Courageous. If we truly know a God worth giving anything for, everything changes.
First time I've ever heard of this author, but she is a magnificient writer! You can feel the passion in her written words which she write from the very depth of her heart & soul. I believe God has used Jennie to help draw people closer to him. This book is about her experience that changed her life with just one prayer. I highly reccomend this book if you're falling short with God. The author will convince you that not only can you have a life more abundant, but more free!

Need You Now By Beth Wiseman

When big-city life threatens the safety of one of their children, Brad and Darlene Henderson move with their three teenagers from Houston to the tiny town of Round Top, Texas. Adjusting to small-town life is difficult for the kids, especially fifteen-year-old Grace who is coping in a dangerous way. Married life hasn't always been bliss, but their strong faith has carried them through the difficult times. When Darlene takes a job outside the home for the first time in their marriage, the domestic tension rises. While working with special needs children at her new job, the widowed father of one of Darlene's students starts paying more attention to her than is appropriate. Problem is, she feels like someone is listening to her for the first time in a long time. If Darlene ever needed God . . . it's now. Experience a family's triumphant defeat over lies, betrayal, and loss while still clinging to the One who matters most.
I love how Beth draws the reader in with her writing style right from the very first page, with the suspense of an intruder in the bedroom. I also enjoyed the real life aspect of this book. The passion between the characters, the possiblity of an affair, the teenage troubles, it's all something we can relate to at some point. There seems to be something for every situation. This is not thefirst book I've read by this author, and I'm really beginning to like her style. I think the bottom line in this book is that it all comes down to forgiveness. How God is so willing to forgive us and we must do the same for others. The sins of the flesh can be so overbearing at times, but it's how we react, give in and recover that matters. I would reccomend this book!

Thank you Momma...

I've been inspired to write this blog post after I recieved an email letting me know about the project (you can read more at the end of this post...)
Dear Momma, What can I say about you that's different from other Mommas? I know everyone thinks they have the best Mom ever, but I truly do. There's nothing you haven't done for me, except give birth, (I'm adopted. Since my Mother was young when she had me, I was raised by my grandparents and I wouldn't want it any other way.) When I was growing up, you taught me that money did not grow on trees, make the best of what you have, and to love God & others with all my heart. So today Momma, I just want to Thank you for so many things, there's too many so I'll just name a few... Thank you for teaching me about God & Jesus. Thank you for taking me to church. Thank you for teaching me to turn the other cheek but fight for what I believe. Thank you for believing in me, even when I didn;t believe in myself. Thank you for staying at home to raise me and being there every day when I got home from school, with some homemade bread, cookies and an open ear. Thank you for always being there. Thank you for discipline, although I thought was harsh at the time, has made me a better person. Thank you for teaching me to cook & clean, two things I now love. Thank you for your unconditional love. ...But most of all, Thank you for choosing me. God sure knew what he was doing when he picked you to be my Momma. I hope I can be half the Mom to my son that you are to me. Love, Candace
